ASSOCIATIVE MEMORY INVESTIGATIONS: SUBSTRUCTURING SEARCHING AND DATA ORGANIZATIONS.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze for associative processing the following test problems: (1) A data retrieval problem for a formatted unstructured file with records which contain multiple-word, fixed-field size items. (2) A data maintenance problem for formatted structured files such that reference checking is required between records of different files. (3) A data maintenance problem for formatted unstructured files of fixed-size, single-word record items such that maintenance of one field is conditional upon another field's value. (4) A data maintenance problem for formatted unstructure files of variable size, multiple word record items such that item values can be maintained without reference to another record. In addition to these data manipulation and retrieval problems, the study of associative processing in substructure searching was performed. More specifically, an algorithm for the search of a substructure contained within a larger structure (a file of such 'larger' structures is assumed) was developed for an associative processor as typified by the Goodyear Associative Processor.
