URBAN CENTERS AND THE SPATIAL PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT IN GHANA.

Abstract

The research presented in this study was focused upon the urban centers and space economy of a developing West African country, Ghana. This research was directed toward outlining the concomitant growth of the urban centers and space economy, identifying and examining the relationships between the various differentiating characteristics of the centers, isolating the major sources of variation in the current urban system, and relating these structural elements to the role and position of the centers in the space economy. Through the application of correlation analysis simple patterns of association were established between the various urban attributes of the thirty-seven towns of over ten thousand population included in the study. An examination of the more complex inter-relationships resulting in the identification of the principle components of urban variance within the Ghanaian urban system was undertaken via factor analysis.
