CULTURE AND HABITAT IN THE CENTRAL HIMALAYAS.
Abstract
The research for this study was carried out in a small area in the outer Himalayas near the town of Mussoorie, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is an inquiry into the interaction between livelihood and habitat. This objective is approached through a study of settlement, agriculture and animal husbandry, and wild vegetation. Settlements are of two types: nucleated villages, and isolated field houses. Terracing and crop rotation are examined. Analysis of the relation of livestock to the Pahari economy and to wild vegetation reveals a symbiotic integration of people, livestock, food crops, and wild fodder vegetation. Since no fodder crops are grown, animals must be supported by crop residues and, more important, by wild vegetation. (Author)
