THE CONDENSATION OF FERROCENE WITH KETONES,

Abstract

Polycondensation of ferrocene with ketones in the presence of the catalyst ZnCl2 + HCl has been studied at atmospheric pressure. At a 1:2 molar ratio of the monomers, soluble and insoluble ferrocene-containing polymers are formed. Their behavior has been studied. The condensation of ketones (acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone and acetophenone) in the presence of ZnCl2 + HCl and in the absence of ferrocene occurs only with the formation of dimers and trimers. The condensation of benzophenone does not occur in this case. During the polycondensation of ketones in the presence of ZnCl2 + HCl and 5 mole % of ferrocene, the activity of the system increases resulting in the formation of liquid and solid polymers that do not contain iron and ferrocene-containing polymers.
