BIOPHYSICAL AND ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF SENSORY MECHANISMS.

Abstract

Investigations were focused on biological light transmitting mechanism and activation processes in photoreceptors using the arthropod eye as object. Electronmicroscopic investigations on the ontogeny of the corneal nipple array - serving as impedance transformer - give new aspects on the formation of extracellular membranes as secretory products from the surface of the epithelial cells and on the phylogeny of the impedance transformer show that it characterizes high orders, exists in subforms in nearby orders and does not exist in all lower orders. Spectrophotometric and electrophysiological studies on the light screening pigment that regulates the inlet of light to the photoreceptors in relation to environmental illumination show that it attenuates evenly in the visible spectrum with the exception of long wave length where the attenuation is less, i.e. at wave lengths which characterizes the light at which these insects are active.
