DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF BINARY DATA: AN APPRAISAL OF THE MMPI.

Abstract

Four methods of extracting factors from binary data were compared on real and hypothetical data matrices. The four were factor analysis on product moment phi, phi corrected for attenuation (phi/phi max or min), Lingoe's Multiscalogram (Guttman dimensional scaling), and Tucker's Dimensional Analysis of Binary Data (DABD). Problems of techniques and error criteria decision rules were discussed. The second part dealt with the application of these methods to 100 of the MMPI items. The dimensionalities of the item space produced by the methods were then compared. (Author)
