McMURDO ICE WHARF - PULLOUT STRENGTH OF PILES.

Abstract

Slightly saline fast ice along the western shore of Winter Quarters Bay, McMurdo Station, Antarctica, has been used as a wharf since January 1964. Progressive damage to this wharf has necessitated design and construction of a protective dock face supported by piles set in the fast ice. To provide data on the resistance of such piles to rapid pullout and long-term tension loads, model piles set in ice were tested at ice temperatures between -10 and 31F. (Author)
