CHEMISORPTION OF NITROGEN AND CO2 ON NICKEL AND PLATINUM,

Abstract

Nitrogen at -196C and CO2 at 25C chemisorb on nickel and platinum. The extent of this chemisorption is variable, depending sensitively on the pretreatment of the surface. The extent of N2 chemisorption can, in some cases, invalidate BET surface area measurements made with this gas. A constant ratio of 2.5/1 exists on nickel and on platinum, between the volume of CO2 chemisorbed at 25C to the volume of N2 chemisorbed at -195C. Prior CO2 adsorption inhibits the chemisorption of N2, implying a direct relationship between the 'N2 sites' and the 'CO2 sites.' (Author)
