THE COUPLING BETWEEN SHELL-MODEL EXCITATIONS AND CLUSTER EXCITATIONS IN LIGHT NUCLEI,

Abstract

The reduced alpha-widths for some levels of 12C and 8Be are calculated in the framework of the shell model with intermediate coupling. A classification of alpha-transitions with regard to the permutation symmetry of the wave function is given. A comparison of calculated and experimental alpha-widths shows that for 12C the shell model gives values in the right order of magnitude only for those levels where no mixing with cluster levels takes place (levels 1 +). The mixing of shell model levels with levels of a collective nature is discussed.
