AN APPARATUS FOR THE IRRADIATION OF SUPERCONDUCTORS.
Abstract
The effects of high-energy particulate irradiation on the properties of superconductive materials are described. Special emphasis is placed on the nature of high-energy neutron-induced defects and their correlation with magnetic flux pinning in Type 2 superconductors. Possible difficulties in applying superconductive magnets to controlled thermonuclear reactors are suggested. The design, construction, and operation of an experimental apparatus are described in detail. The use of this apparatus for the detailed study of high-energy (14 mev) neutron irradiation on the technologically significant Type 2 superconductive materials is described. Long-duration neutron generation using a Cockroft-Walton accelerator is discussed. Design considerations for neutron irradiation cryostats are discussed in detail. (Author)
