MEASUREMENT BY TRANSVERSE WAVE PROFILES OF THE WAVE RESISTANCE OF THREE FORMS OF 'MINIMUM' RESISTANCE AND OF SERIES 60, BLOCK 0.60,

Abstract

The report presents the results of direct measurement of the wave resistance of three models designed to be of minimum resistance at Froude numbers 0.267, 0.289, and 0.316, and of a model of Series 60, C sub B = 0.60. The wave resistance was computed by Eggers' method, using transverse cuts and stereophotogrammetry. The most striking result is that the measured wave resistance is generally much lower than the residuary resistance and, in the case of the models of minimum resistance, more consistent with the Mitchell resistance than the residuary resistance in the range of 0.2 < or = Fr < or = 0.3.
