OPTICAL PROCESSING OF ACOUSTIC SIGNALS.
Abstract
The application of optical signal processing techniques to the transient detection and classification problem has been studied, and a suboptimum correlation detector that utilizes such techniques has been analyzed. The transient problem is first defined, and Nolte's optimum adaptive detector is described. A suboptimum correlation detector is compared to the optimum adaptive detector, and a description of the optical realization of the correlation detector is given. The results indicate that this detector performs well in comparison to the optimum detector for synchronously recurrent transients under low signal-to-noise conditions, and is optimum for periodic transients. For the sporadic transient case, it is concluded that the implementation of nonlinear signal processing in optical systems should be investigated. (Author)
