NEW SOFTWARE FOR DATA MANAGEMENT.

Abstract

A brief survey and tabulation of recent developments in the area of new software of data management. The choice was made of TDMS, DM-1, GIS, IMS, COGENT II, AEGIS, MADAM, MARK IV, QWICK QWERY, and SPAN as systems for which something 'new' can be reported in September of 1968. No breakthrough is reported and existence of the Holy Grail of data management is denied. Instead, slow progress toward previously publicized goals, plus a few new entries with variations on old themes, characterizes the scene. The progress is encouraging in that it shows increased sensitivity to end-users' needs and a more determined effort to be responsive. Competition is yielding its beneficial effects. (Author)
