MECHANICAL SEMANTIC ANALYSIS AND THE COMPATIBILITY OF ENGLISH ADJECTIVES.

Abstract

The document discusses various implications, favorable and adverse, of the algorithm for producing semantic analyses of English phrases and sentences in the Protosynthex III semantic analysis machine. The analysis of noun phrases of the type 'adjective (+ adjective) + noun' is discussed in detail and several grammars are outlined for analyzing such strings. A grammar which combines constituents in an order other than that of immediacy is shown to be useful. The article ends by proposing the usefulness of a concept of 'negative semantic event forms' in addition to the positive semantic event forms already incorporated in the program. Such negative semantic event forms would express what relations between word senses are semantically inadmissible in a parallel way to that in which positive semantic event forms express semantically acceptable relations between word senses.
