AUTOMATIC GUY WIRE TENSIONING DEVICE.

Abstract

The capacity of vertically erected masts is described in terms of the weight and size of the vertical payload it will support at particular values of windloading. Prior to this development, no practical method existed for controlling the payout and retraction of guy lines so that during the erection process, the mast could be supported at locations other than the base. This necessity for erecting the masts in an unsupported configuration seriously limits its capacity. This development provides equipment that can be added to existing mast equipment which will provide an automatic 'guy-as-you-go' capability. The capacity of a mast is increased several fold with the addition of this equipment. The equipment is described, operating principles based upon the use of a mechanical differential are explained, and procedures for analyzing the mast structure are given. (Author)
