FATIGUE AND FRACTURE ANALYSIS OF THE 175MM M113 GUN TUBE.

Abstract

During an earlier program to evaluate the safe life of the 175mm M113 gun tube, an unusually large variation in fatigue life between tubes was observed. In this current investigation, the fatigue life characteristics of the 175mm gun tube are examined from the standpoint of the fracture mechanisms involved and the application of fracture mechanics. Examined in detail are four tubes; three having been fired nominally 1000 Zone 3 rounds each, and the fourth 1700 rounds. Also included for comparison purposes are the tubes representing the extremes in fatigue life as determined in the safe life evaluation program along with several others exhibiting unusual behavior.
