DIFFUSION BONDING OF TITANIUM ALLOYS.

Abstract

The report discusses diffusion bonding experiments performed on Ti-6Al-4V to study the effect of temperature, pressure, and surface finish on bond strength for several bonding times. Good bonds were obtained, as measured by shear tests, at a temperature of 1440F on samples with a 15 micro-in. finish with a pressure of 400 psi applied for 60 min. The shear test was used to give a simple and accurate measure of bond strength. In addition, ultrasonic methods and metallography were used to give a qualitative indication of bond integrity.
