DETERMINING THE SPECIFIC HEATS OF GASES AT HIGH PRESSURES,

Abstract

As is known, the specific heats of gases under high pressures may be determined directly from experiment and calculated according to P, V, and T. In most cases, the determination of specific heats on the basis of experimental data is not feasible owing to the complexity of calculations and ponderosity of apparatus. The present work deals with an indirect method of determining the numerical values of specific heats, which is currently being worked on by a group of investigators (Shmidt, Deming, Shupe and others). The indirect method was found to be much simpler and more accurate than the direct method, since it completely eliminates graphic representation. A proportionality factor is used to maintain equality between the right- and left-hand sides of the equation PV = RT and curves of the compression factor as a function of temperature and pressure are developed and used.
