TWO-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF STRESS AND STRAIN IN SOILS. REPORT 4. DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF STRIP FOOTING ON ELASTIC-PLASTIC SOIL.
Abstract
The report describes a numerical procedure for predicting the dynamic response of strip footings on saturated, clay soils. Unlike existing analyses, the computational procedure includes elastic deformations as well as deformations during contained plastic flow. Very satisfactory agreement was found between predicted results and experimental data provided by the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The study examines the effects of several different variables on the peak displacement of the footing. The results clearly show the influence of load pulse duration and applied peak intensity. They illustrate that for a nonstrain-rate sensitive soil, a footing cannot carry any transient load in excess of the static bearing capacity, unless the pulse duration is very short or large plastic displacements are accepted. The report includes recommendations for future extensions of this work. (Author)
