INVESTIGATION OF NEW SYNTHETIC ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS INTENDED FOR USE IN MEDICINE AND INDUSTRY,

Abstract

Five new antimicrobial medicinal preparations have been synthesized, studied for antimicrobial and pharmacological properties, and introduced into medical practice during the past 10 years. Among these five, ASA, DiChASA and AMC are antifungal preparations, while DiBASA and Ciminal are antibacterial preparations which are effective against the suppurogenic cocci and have valuable therapeutic properties in the staphylodermias and wounds complicated by purulent infections. In addition, two highly effective antibiotics, the isothiocyanates of caproic acid and p-carbomethoxybenzene, and the water-soluble anticandidal preparation Oprophen or Oprophenon, which belongs to the Mannich bases, have been discovered and thoroughly investigated. A new, colorless antifungal antiseptic which belongs to the 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives and which does not have a disagreeable odor has also been studied, tested, and introduced into practical use in the food industry. A significant number of biologically active compounds--Schiff bases, disulfides and other compounds--with varying antimicrobial spectra, the further study of which seems promising, have also been synthesized in the laboratory.
