NUCLEAR MAGNETIC AND QUADRUPOLE INTERACTIONS IN GARNETS.

Abstract

The nuclear magnetic and quadrupole fields in the garnet structure are studied. NMR measurements are made on the Ga71 and Ga69 isotopes in diamagnetic YGaG and in ferrimagnetic Ga-doped YIG. NMR measurements are also made on Al27 in diamagnetic YAIG. The gallium NMR was measured in single crystal samples of ferrimagnetic Ga-doped YIG. The local field, linewidth and relaxation times are reported. The resonance at the gallium sites is shown to be an interesting example of the local mode resonance associated with an array of spins containing a defect spin. The linewidth is found to be very broad, mainly because of interactions between the impurity sites. The various mechanisms for nuclear relaxation in magnetic materials is reviewed. (Author)
