AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF CYLINDRICAL BODIES OF SMALL FRONTAL ASPECT RATIO NEAR AN END-PLATE SHIELD,

Abstract

An experimental study is made of the effect of a plane surface (simulating the ground) on the lift and drag coefficients of circular cylinders of small frontal aspect ratios (height/diameter) at Reynolds numbers of 100,000 to 1,000,000. The cylinders were arranged with their lateral cross-sections (base) parallel to the plane shield (ground board), and their frontal aspect ratios ranged from 0.15 to 1.0. Experimental data are plotted for the dependence of the lift and drag coefficients on the frontal aspect ratio, proximity to the shield, and Re number. (Author)
