THE CHARACTER OF AIR FORCE DENTISTRY,

Abstract

The primary mission of Air Force dentistry is to provide world-wide oral health services to its personnel. The dental needs of special military groups are influenced by operational activities, environments, and physiologic stresses. Special military groups can be divided into: the recruit, combat personnel, flying personnel, closed-systems personnel, and aeromedical evacuees. The Air Force has developed a vigorous program of personal, preventive dentistry. A new, intermediate or holding-type restorative dental filling material (PIRM) has been developed for effective and rapid dental treatment under adverse conditions in Southeast Asia and other remote areas. Barodontalgia, the phenomenon of dental pain due to changes in barometric pressure, has been linked to the altitude, flight profile, and pre-existing pathologic conditions in aircrew members.
