DEVELOPMENT OF A WATER-FREE MOLDED PLASTIC SUPPORT FOR PACKAGING FUZES IN THE M2A1 AMMUNITION BOX.

Abstract

A water-free injection molded plastic support for artillery fuzes was developed. This support was fabricated on the basis of the polyethylene formulation specified in MIL-S-60997. The support, when substituted for the currently specified expandable polystyrene support in the M2A1 metal ammunition box, successfully met the physical and chemical requirements of this application. The support meets the basic objective of this project in being free of internal water which could cause item corrosion. It does not, however, offer any improvement over the current support in the prevention of sympathetic detonation. (Author)
