FORBIDDEN TRANSITIONS INDUCED IN ATOMIC SYSTEMS BY HOMOGENEOUS AND INHOMOGENEOUS ELECTRIC INTERMOLECULAR FIELDS IN A PLASMA,

Abstract

Consideration is given to transitions which are forbidden by the selection rules for electric dipole, electric quadrupole, magnetic dipole and similar transitions, which are produced in the plasma by the electric intermolecular field. The formulas for the transition probabilities and for the transition intensities are presented from various literature sources and the results of concrete calculations are presented for the intensity of the forbidden transitions in lithium, sodium, copper, and cesium. In the case of inhomogeneous electric fields, the results of the calculations are given for cesium only. Possible application of the results for diagnostic purposes is mentioned. (Author)
