SOME OBSERVATIONS ON ENERGETIC ELECTRONS IN THE OUTER VAN ALLEN ZONE DURING AURORAL SUBSTORMS IN RELATION TO OPEN AND CLOSED FIELD LINES.

Abstract

Data regarding the high latitude boundaries and fluxes of electrons of energy greater than 40 keV in the midnight sector of the outer Van Allen zone during periods of auroral substorm activity are studied in this paper. It is observed that, during the expansive phase of a substorm, there is a large increase in flux but the boundary remains at the quiet time value (approx. 68 degrees). A simultaneous study of the latitudinal variation of the substorm activity indicates that its onset takes place at a latitude much lower than that of the outer zone boundary. From this it is concluded that the onset of auroral substorm activity takes place on closed magnetic field lines. (Author)
