ULTRASONIC VIBRATION POTENTIALS AND MICELLE FORMATION.
Abstract
Ultrasonic vibration potential measurements have been made in solutions of salts exhibiting micelle formation. Specific systems studied have included sodium lauryl sulfate (NaLS) and laurylpyridinium bromide (LPB) and iodide (LPI). The apparatus and techniques are similar to those used in earlier contract research. These studies indicate the following: (1) Experimental data for ionic vibration potentials in dilute solutions of NaLS at concentrations far below the critical micelle concentration agree well with theoretical values; (2) The concentration dependence of the vibration potentials in solutions of NaLS, LPBr and LPI at concentrations below the critical micelle concentration provides strong evidence for the formation of charged aggregates which are precursers to micelle formation; (3) In favorable situations, ultrasonic vibration potentials can be used to recognize the critical micelle concentration.
