A STUDY OF VISUAL SEARCH USING EYE MOVEMENT RECORDINGS: COLOR CODING FOR INFORMATION LOCATION.
Abstract
The effectiveness of color coding on maps for information location as a means of reducing search time was investigated. The conceptual framework and relevant portions of the data base developed over the past several years are summarized. It was found that relatively large numbers of colors could be used effectively to code the location of classes of information. Factors believed to account for this were: (a) removal of the limitations of long-term memory from the display-reading process; and (b) systematic selection of colors highly discriminable in peripheral vision.
