MICROBIOLOGIC STUDIES OF THE ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS FOR THE RECYCLING OF HUMAN WASTES

Abstract

A study of the metabolic characteristics of the bacteria present in activated sludge has been carried out. The organisms were isolated employing standard bacteriologic technics. After isolation, the isolates were examined in Warburg studies and in substrate depletion studies. The substrates studied were the common constituents of human feces and urine, and additional materials such as cellulose, and soaps and detergents not easily replaced in remote environments.
