APPLICATION OF MODIFIED ENGINEERING METHOD TECHNIQUES TO SKYSHINE RADIATION MEASUREMENTS.

Abstract

The results of US Army Nuclear Defense Laboratory (USANDL) skyshine reduction factor measurements for open and concrete-covered basements are compared with theoretical reduction factor formulations. New empirical procedures are developed within the engineering method format to improve the agreement between theory and experiment. In the covered basement cases, a new geometry factor is developed which includes the effects of scattered and unscattered radiation in the basement cover. In addition to the modified engineering method techniques developed for calculating skyshine reduction factors, a new method of calculating far field corrections is developed for experiments measuring skyshine exposure rates in open and covered basements. While the new method does not give corrections which differ significantly from other methods, it permits an estimate of the standard error in the far field correction and is less sensitive to the exposure rate measured for the outermost experimental annulus used in the USANDL experiments.
