HIGH RATE PRIMARY ZINC/AIR BATTERY.
Abstract
The electrode components were finalized. The electro-chemical and economic optimization of the cathode was completed with the selection of a .003-inch electrode backing layer and a .005-inch flexible expanded nickel current collector. The pressed powder anode with a perforated copper current collector was chosen over the paste anode for the final design. Five-cell batteries utilizing the intermediate design were fabricated and discharged at the 0.3 and 2.5 amp rate at 75F: the required 16 amp-hrs was achieved in both cases. Discharging the battery on an 18:2 minute duty cycle at 0.3 amps and 2.5 amps respectively, simulating radio transceiver operation, yielded over 18 amp-hrs. Anode wet storage at 125F was extended to three months without significant capacity loss. Initial bicell activated storage to one month also showed promising results. The new production cell design was completed and tested as single cells. Intercell separator materials were investigated with plastic foams showing the most promise. (Author)
