RESPONSE OF NON LINEAR STRUCTURES TO BLAST.

Abstract

The object of the research was to develop analytical methods for determining the nonlinear response of a structural element subjected to blast loading. Three technical reports were prepared: Elasticity solution by a modified Galerkin method; Permanent deformation of an axial rod subjected to dynamic loading; and Deflection of a circular plate subjected to blast loading. They are included as appendices in this report. The following conclusions were reached: The Modified Galerkin Method will, for a structural systems, yield results which are reasonably accurate. The new concepts introduced for treatment of boundary conditions are valid. The permanent set of an axial rod subjected to dynamic loading can be determined using the proposed methods. The efforts (of previous investigators) to determine analytically the permanent deformation of a plate subjected to blast loading have led to poor results because of the fact that the stretching of the plate has been neglected.
