SURGES OF CONSIDERABLE STRATOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS OVER ARMENIA,
Abstract
The paper gives some results of investigation of the stratosphere over Armenia on the basis of daily aerological observations at Yerevan in 1961. A periodic temperature changes in Armenia occur not only in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, but also in the higher layers of the latter, possibly to its upper boundary. These variations are observed for the most part in the warm season of the year and in the middle stratosphere frequently attain 10-15 degrees in 1-2 days. The most important causative factor apparently is vertical air movements induced by the stratospheric subtropical frontal zone. The article gives an extremely well-expressed case of this stratospheric temperature change in the second half of August, 1961. At the same time, the temperature fluctuations in the troposphere were up to 10-14 degrees but the temperature changes in the stratosphere and troposphere were opposite in sign. (Author)
