THE EXISTENCE OF SUPERSONIC ZONES IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL SEPARATED FLOWS (O Sushchestvovanii Sverkhzvukovykh Zon v Prostranstvennykh Otryvnykh Techeniyakh),

Abstract

The flow in front of a cylinder mounted on a flat plate in a supersonic stream at M = 3.11 was investigated using pitot and static pressure measurements together with shadow and surface flow photographs. The existence of local supersonic zones near the subsonic reversed flow in the separated region at the base of the cylinder was confirmed and explained by the three-dimensional nature of the flow. Mach numbers of the order of 1.25 have been detected in this region. A model is given indicating the shock wave structure and the nature of the flow past the cylinder. (Author)
