STUDY OF KINETICS OF ALKALI METAL DEPOSITION AND DISSOLUTION IN NONAQUEOUS SOLUTIONS.
Abstract
Studies are described of the kinetics and mechanism of both lithium amalgam and solid lithium electrodes in aprotic organic solvents of high purity under controlled conditions. Activation overpotentials were obtained separately from ohmic or mass-transfer contributions by a galvanostatic pulse technique. From these measurements the kinetic parameters of the electron transfer reaction in LiCl-dimethyl sulfoxide were obtained. The observed exchange current in LiCl-DMSO of unit activity on a solid lithium electrode is less than the rate obtained on a saturated lithium amalgam in the same electrolyte. Other investigations reported include studies of the thallium amalgam-thallous chloride reference electrode, a review of electrochemistry in the solvent dimethyl sulfoxide, measurements of the thermodynamic activity of lithium in lithium amalgams, thermodynamics and kinetics of the tetraethyl ammonium amalgam electrode, electrodeposition of lithium on various substrate metals, purification and analysis of dimethyl sulfoxide, solubility of various salts in dimethyl sulfoxide, and details of construction for the galvanostatic pulse generator used in the kinetic measurements.
