SUNSPOT MOTION STATISTICS,

Abstract

The document covers the basic characteristics of sunspot movement as developed in previous statistical investigations. Some of the difficulties in relating spot movements to large-scale photospheric motions, and possible terrestrial atmospheric analogues, are discussed. The differential rotation rate is studied. Bigger spot group speeds in longitude and latitude drift patterns are studied. The correlation between longitude and latitude motions indicates momentum transport toward the equator at all latitudes studied. We have also computed correlations involving various spot area parameters and spot motions. Possible explanations of the significant results are discussed. (Author)
