RULING ELITE THEORIES AND RESEARCH METHODS: AN EVALUATION

Abstract

The intention of this essay is to suggest new approaches to the analytical treatment of a simple and important issue: determining the political power of the economic elites. It will be necessary to define terms and review the extensive debate concerning the assumptions and methods used by analysts concerned with the general problems of elites and political influence. In the course of intellectual argument, the contours of the three important contemporary 'schools' of elite analysis have been determined; these can be labeled the Marxist, stratification theorist, and group pluralist.
