SOVIET AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND OTHER TOPOGRAPHIC, GEODETIC AND CARTOGRAPHIC SURVEYS IN THE ANTARCTIC,

Abstract

For cartographic purposes, Antarctic was photographed by means of radial aerial traverses. Coastal regions with rock outcrops were completely photographed from the air; radio altimeter and statoscopic data were recorded at the same time. The scale of mapping varied from 1:30,000 to 1:60,000. Astronomical stations served as check points, while the centers of radial traverses were used as altitude control points. The remainder of Antarctica, nine tenths of the total area, was covered by a network of control strips linked to stations on the coast and to the astronomical stations in the interior. (Author)
