AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPHERE AND BLUNT-NOSED CONE IN A HIGHLY RAREFIED GAS FLOW,

Abstract

An analytical method for determining the aerodynamic properties of a sphere and blunt-nosed cone in a highly rarefied gas flow is presented, taking account of interactions of rebounding molecules with those of the oncoming stream ahead of the body, moving at high supersonic speed. Expressions for the number of collisions at the point A are established for the cases of a sphere and a truncated cone. The effect of the mutual collisions of the emitted molecules on the aerodynamic characteristics and the effect of attenuation of the oncoming molecules on the rebounding flux are evaluated using the first-collision method.
