THE BEHAVIOR OF THE PACIFIC COD IN VARIOUS ZOOGEOGRAPHICAL AREAS (O Povedenii Tikhookeanskoi Treski v Razlichnykh Zoogeograficheskikh Rayonakh),

Abstract

The cod Gadus morhua macrocephalus is widely distributed in the northern part of the Pacific, from the Bering Strait to the Yellow Sea, thus dwelling in very different climatic conditions. Its temperature optimum lies from -0.5 to 8 degrees. Having penetrated into southern regions, the oceanological regime of which considerably differs from those usually inhabited by cod in northern-boreal regions, the cod has changed its mode of life. The example of the cod serves as an additional proof of the significance of temperature in the reproduction, development and metabolism of the species. (Author)
