PLACE OF MATHEMATICS IN THE SYSTEM OF SCIENCES,

Abstract

The article approaches mathematics from the philosophical viewpoint, dwelling on the nonnumerical side of this science. There is penetration, he finds, of mathematical methods into the sphere of social investigations, and the traditional 'exact' sciences must be presented with powerful mathematical equipment. Three stages of mathematical knowledge are found. The first is the simple numerical processing of empirical data. It is also being extended. The stages are not taken up in order but are discussed simultaneously in great detail. The role of topology in mathematics is stressed and discussed in detail. The author states that the tendency to a primary development in our day of the nonmetrical, nonquantitative sections of mathematics proves to be only one side of the more general and profound tendencies characteristics for contemporary natural science as a whole.
