CONVAIR HYPERSONIC SHOCK TUNNEL - OPERATING CONDITIONS.

Abstract

The operating conditions for the hypersonic shock tunnel are described in both the freely expanding jet and in the reflected shock-nozzle configurations. For correct enthalpy simulation, Mach number and altitude conditions in the test section are plotted in terms of the pressures upstream and downstream of the upstream diaphragm. Use of the facility in producing high Reynolds number conditions at low enthalpies is also described. Flow characteristics through the nozzle with the air in equilibrium are presented and the effects of the flow becoming frozen during the expansion are described. Inasmuch as shock attenuation effects along the driven section are neglected these predictions may be somewhat optimistic. (Author)
