FACTORS AFFECTING ERYTHROCYTE DESTRUCTION IN MALARIA.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was the investigation of the mechanisms by which anemia is produced in animals with malaria and evaluation of the use of corticosteroids as adjuncts in the treatment of malaria. The investigation utilizes autoradiographic Coombs' tests, erythrocyte survival studies, erythrocyte electrophoresis, and experimental testing of the effect of corticosteroids on the action of antimalarials in chickens with malaria. The results to date indicate that nonparasitized erythrocytes, as well as parasitized ones, are damaged by their residence in the circulatory systems of chickens with malaria. There is also evidence that at proper dose levels combinations of corticosteroids and antimalarials may ameliorate the anemia of chickens with malaria more than do antimalarials alone. (Author)
