3200 ANGSTROM PHOSPHOR.

Abstract

The report discusses a research and development program leading to the production of a cathodoluminescent phosphor which emits with high efficiency in the spectral region around 3200A. This phosphor is to be incorporated into very high resolution cathode-ray tubes with fiber optic faceplates for data recording on UV sensitive, dry-processed film. The materials to be investigated in this program and the reasons for their selection are summarized. Descriptions are given of the experimental equipment and procedures. The results of experimental investigations of beta-CaSiO3, alpha-CaSiO3 and beta-Ca2SiO4 lead-doped phosphors are presented. The first of these had been previously shown to be an efficient UV phosphor with an emission peak at 3400A; the test samples prepared during this quarter exhibited comparable efficiencies and work is progressing to optimize the doping concentration. The beta-Ca2SiO4:Pb samples exhibited very intense luminescence in a broad band centered at 3800A. While the emission band is not where it was expected to be, and is a poor match to the specifications, the phosphor may be useful in other applications. (Author)
