INVESTIGATION OF THE ROLE OF THE INTERFACE IN COMPOSITE MATERIALS.

Abstract

The role of the interface in composite materials has been investigated to determine the nature of bonding between matrix and dispersed constituents and the manner in which these bonds across the interface actually give rise to the resultant properties of the composite material. An analysis of the types of bonds formed was made and atomistic models are proposed for the various layers of atoms across the interface. The role of the intermediate layers in bonding between metals and ceramics is discussed and a model presented to explain the experimental observations. (Author)
