UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS AT STRAIN RATES FROM 0.0001/SEC. TO 1000/SEC. ON THREE GEOLOGIC MATERIALS.

Abstract

Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on Solenhofen limestone, Westerly granite, and dry tuff at strain rates from 0.0001/second to about 1000/second at room temperature and with no confining pressure. Low and medium strain rates were obtained using an Instron screw driven machine and a Medium Strain-Rate Machine. High strain rates were obtained using the Hopkinson bar technique. Results are presented as stress-strain curves at constant strain rates and as stress-log strain-rate curves at constant strains. The experimental results and explanations of the observed behavior are presented along with a detailed description of the materials investigated and the experimental techniques implemented. (Author)
