A REVIEW OF THE FORCES AND HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF BODIES IN FREE-MOLECULE FLOW,

Abstract

The free-molecule regime is discussed with particular attention being given to the case of extreme molecular speed ratios such as would be expected at satellite velocities. Force and heat transfer characteristics are discussed and a number of illustrations have been borrowed from the literature in order to indicate the expected magnitude of the pertinent parameters. A section describing some of the experimental devices presently being used for free-molecule flow studies is also included. (Author)
