THE VIBRATIONAL SPECTRA OF DICYANODIAZOMETHANE ((CN)2CNN) AND THE DICYANOMETHYLENE FREE RADICAL (:C(CN)2).

Abstract

Infrared spectra were obtained for (CN)2CNN in the solid state and isolated in inert matrices. Crude Raman spectra of dicyanodiazomethane in acetonitrile solution were also obtained. The vibrational analysis has been performed on the basis of C2v symmetry and correlated with the spectra of a number of related molecules. Photolysis of matrix isolated (CN)2CNN yields sufficient :C(CN)2 (dicyanomethylene), stabilized in situ, to permit observation of the infrared spectrum. The results of the vibrational analysis indicate that the linear diradical has an extremely low central carbon bending frequency, analogous to those of C3O2 and C3S2. (Author)
