RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARD UNDERSTANDING BEHAVIOR AND DETECTION OF PLASMAS IN MAGNETIC FIELD.

Abstract

A summary is given of a study of the physics of high voltage, large current plasma discharges. Studied were discharges with currents large enough for magnetic field effects to be prominent (> 100,000 A) and voltages large enough for relativistic effects to be appreciable (> 1,000,000 V). Towards this end, the emphasis during this period was placed on reliable diagnostic techniques. 1MV electric field probes, 1MA current probes, and a double exposure holographic optical probing system were developed. The elements of the discharge apparatus are reviewed and the diagnostic methods are described. In addition a study of the structure of ball-lightning was concluded and the pertinent results are presented. (Author)
