ENERGY AND MOMENTUM OF WAVES IN NON-UNIFORM PLASMAS,

Abstract

A plasma wave, or wave packet, possesses certain permanent attributes which can be identified as its energy-momentum components, even when the unperturbed plasma is strongly non-uniform. The expressions for these attributes are quadratic in the amplitudes of the first-order field perturbations, the potential perturbations and the distribution function perturbations, no reference to second-order perturbations having to be made. The 'wave energy' is identifiable with the 'r-f' energy used in microwave and beam-plasma research. It is also identical with a certain quadratic invariant which has been employed successfully in stability studies. (Author)
